GST Registration in Jaipur
Who needs GST registration, what documents to keep ready, how the process works and what to do after you receive your GSTIN – explained by the Chartered Accountants at Agar & Co.
Who needs GST registration?
Registration is generally required when your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold, which for Rajasthan is currently ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for suppliers of services. Some businesses must register regardless of turnover, for example those making inter-state supplies of goods, certain e-commerce sellers and operators, and persons liable to pay tax under reverse charge. Businesses below the threshold may also register voluntarily, for example to claim input tax credit or to sell to registered businesses.
Thresholds and special cases change from time to time, so we confirm the position for your business before you apply.
Documents usually required
- PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors.
- Passport-size photographs.
- Proof of the business premises – rent agreement with the owner’s consent, or ownership document, and a recent electricity bill or property tax receipt.
- Bank account details – a cancelled cheque or a bank statement.
- For companies and LLPs – the incorporation certificate and the authorisation of the signatory.
The process, step by step
- Confirm the requirement – turnover, type of supply, state of supply and the correct type of registration.
- Prepare the application – business details, principal place of business, goods or services (HSN / SAC) and authorised signatory.
- File on the GST portal – with Aadhaar authentication and document uploads.
- Track the application – the department may verify documents, and may ask for clarification, which must be answered within the time stated in the notice.
- Receive the GSTIN and certificate – registration is normally granted within about seven working days when the application is in order.
There is no government fee for GST registration. Professional fees depend on the complexity of the case and are discussed before we begin.
After registration: return dates to remember
Regular monthly filers file GSTR-1 (outward supplies) by the 11th and GSTR-3B (summary return and tax payment) by the 20th of the following month. Taxpayers under the QRMP scheme file quarterly, with the monthly payment due by the 25th and quarterly returns falling on the 13th (GSTR-1) and the 22nd or 24th (GSTR-3B), depending on the state. Late filing attracts a fee and interest, so a compliance calendar is worth setting up on day one. Our tax videos cover the monthly calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Is GST registration mandatory for a small business in Jaipur?
Not always. If your turnover is below the threshold and none of the special cases apply, registration is optional. Many small businesses still register voluntarily to deal with registered customers and to claim input tax credit.
Can I register from a home address?
In many cases, yes. You will need proof of the address, such as an electricity bill, and, if the home is not owned by you, the owner’s consent.
How long does GST registration take?
Registration is normally granted within about seven working days when the application is complete and no clarification is needed. If the department raises a query, the time increases.
Do you also file the GST returns after registration?
Yes. We can handle monthly or quarterly GST returns, reconciliations and replies to GST notices. Ask about it on a 15-minute call.
